Hung Hing-Ying Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Science & Technology
The Department is very pleased to announce the public lecture of Professor Dr. Paul Embrechts (ETH Zurich) during his visit to HKU as Hung Hing-Ying Distinguished Visiting Professor in Science and Technology. He will talk about risk and randomness, and the regularly heard "why do rare events happen so often".

It has come to the notice of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) that suspicious emails are being sent to invite registrations for the “2017 International Conference on Economics, Statistics, Management Science (ESMS2017)” claiming a professor of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, Faculty of Science, as one of the General Chairs of the organising committee. The University has reasons to suspect that the aforesaid conference is a fraud.

Further to the establishment of the endowed Patrick S C Poon Professorship in Statistics and Actuarial Science, Dr. Patrick Sun-Cheong Poon has made recurrent donation to continue the Patrick Poon Lecture Series in Actuarial Science, which was established in 2004.
The Department is also deeply grateful to Dr. Poon for his great generosity in making donation to continue the Dr Patrick S C Poon Scholarship in Actuarial Science, which awards up to ten Actuarial Science freshmen. In 2012, Dr. Poon pledged another donation to the University of Hong Kong for the establishment of Dr Patrick S C Poon Scholarship in Statistics, which awards up to four outstanding undergraduates who pursue Decision Analytics, Risk Management or Statistics studies.
